Travel

Lightweight shoes or sandals designed for general recreation, path walking, travel, sight-seeing etc. Some designs are compatible with water sports use.

  • Soft flex and minimal support
  • Open (sandal) or closed (shoe) construction
  • Relaxed comfortable fit

Approach

Path based walking in easy terrain. Some are designed for trail-running or fell running and some are designed for scrambling and easy climbing. Most are suitable Everyday recreational use.

  • Lightweight fabric/leather uppers, some backed with waterproof membranes
  • Low to mid height ankle
  • Soft flex sole units with limited underfoot support some with "sticky" rubber tread

Hillwalking

All seasons path based walking with enough support for off path route finding in reasonable terrain. Suited to medium weight load carrying.

  • Constructed with medium thickness (2.4 to 2.6 mm) full grain or nubuk leather uppers or reinforced fabric composite construction
  • Many backed with waterproof membranes
  • Medium levels of ankle and under-foot support with medium flex mid-soles

Crampon Compatibility

  • B0 - Not suitable for use with crampons
  • B1 - Compatible with flexible strap-on walkers crampon C1

Mountain Walking

All seasons on/off path walking in steep/rough terrain and heavy load carrying. Crampon usage on easy to moderate terrain. Some especially suited to scrambles and via ferrata.

  • Most with thick leather uppers (2.6 to 3.0 mm)
  • Mid to high levels of ankle and mid-sole support
  • Medium to stiff flex mid-soles

Crampon Compatibility

  • B1 - Compatible with flexible strap-on walkers crampon C1
  • B2 - Compatible with semi-rigid/semi-automatic crampon C2

Mountaineering

General mountaineering and/or technical ice and mixed climbing. Some suited to specialist expedition use in cold climates and high altitudes.

  • Single layer insulated leather/fabric boots or double layer plastic/composite construction
  • Some with integrated (often insulated) gaiters

Crampon Compatibility

  • B2 - Compatible with semi-rigid/semi-automatic crampon C2
  • B3 - Compatible with rigid/step-in crampons C3
