I opened the first Outside store in May 1987. On our first day's trading we only had a meagre range of stock, neither the shop nor the café upstairs were fully finished and the builders were on a promise to come back and 'make good' the work still to do! Our first ever sale was a Wild Country chalk bag and a block of chalk for £11.20p.
I knew that a shop in the Peak District would work. I'd come up from London where I'd been serving my apprenticeship in the outdoor trade at Alpine Sports and was now committed to developing a new store in a fantastic location, filled with a great range of quality gear, sold by active staff that wanted to treat customers as they would expect to be treated themselves.
A lot has happened in the meantime, but our commitment is still as clear now as it was in 1987. Our equipment selection is still thorough, our range of gear unparalleled, our pricing competitive and we still pride ourselves on being able to guide customers through the confusion of modern marketing to help them purchase the right kit for their requirements.
The growth of the internet and our increasing understanding of web technology have led us to put more time and effort into our online presence. When we first went online in 1999 it was a natural progression for our business, simply opening another branch in a new location. This recently improved site is designed to offer you the very best of our stores by giving you access to the same fabulous products, key information and great prices that are found on our shop floors.
I hope you enjoy shopping in this 'virtual store'. Our aim is to make the site fast and responsive to browse through and we'll endeavor to answer any of your queries thoroughly and fulfill your orders speedily.
