Cams are anodised for corrosion protection and easy size-identification but the contact surfaces are left raw for better friction in marginal placements. The strong steel cable that makes up the stem is encased in a spring for protection, yet still bends effectively. Totem cams are a unique solution to protecting small, flared, shallow or unusually shaped cracks.
The patented Direct Loading Camming Device system (US patent 7,014,156) applies a perfectly equalized load directly onto each lobe, eliminating the risk of inactive lobes and therefore any outbalanced forces that might compromise cam placement stability. Where rock contact with four cam lobes is not possible, Totem Cam still offers the option to load just two lobes.
