Inspirational lectures, music and poetry from some of the country's leading climbers and mountaineers, once a month at the Outside Cafe.
The Alpine Club stands alone as the only national club for alpinists, as well as being the world's first mountaineering club. For a century and a half its members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering, development, and exploration.
The club is well known for hosting regular lectures on a wide variety of subjects. Outside are proud to be one of three hosts in the country for these fabulous events! Our Hathersage café is the club's Northern venue, hosting an evening lecture every month through the winter
The lectures are free of charge, open to all, and since they are held in the Outside Café, refreshments will be available.

Chris Harle - Ken Wilson and the 'Mountain' Years

With access to documents and photographs to illustrate Wilson’s influence on world mountaineering, this will be a nostalgic trip back to a time when Scott and Haston became the first Brits to summit Everest, Hard Rock was the puerile tick list and racy Edelrid rope adverts were not seen as sexist.

Steve Swenson - Karakoram: Climbing Through the Kashmir Conflict
Karakoram is world-class alpinist Steve Swenson's personal story of climbing K2 and other peaks in the Karakoram Range that straddles the borders of China, India, and Pakistan. It’s a story told against the backdrop of extreme altitude and conflict between these nations for control of Kashmir. He is a past President of the American Alpine Club and an extremely accomplished Alpinist. His book Karakoram will be available to purchase on the night.
